Lisbeth Nypan

Where was she executed?

Sør-Trøndelag, Norway

Why was she accused of witchcraft?

Nypan was a local healer, and one of her methods was "reading in salt." She would pray over salt then feed it to her patient as treatment. The community began to fear that if she could heal, she could also cause illness. She began to be blamed for sicknesses.

Other Information:

  • The image on her tombstone is the alchemist's symbol for salt.

  • Nypan and her husband refused to admit guilt even under tortue. This put them in contempt of court. At that time, the best course of action was often to admit guilt and undergo repentance.
